Hello
I’ll be in the UK during August and wanted to take the chance to look for some tools, specifically an old Stanley router plane as the prices in Germany for a new one are quite high. Does anyone have any suggestions where there may be a tool market/flea/market/car boot sale which could be a good place to look?
Many thanks

21 July 2014 at 3:44 pm #59634Thanks Cornflowers, I did think that may be a method. I found these two:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=131227213920&ssPageName=ADME:B:SS:GB:3160
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=221451617505&ssPageName=ADME:B:SS:GB:3160
Which seems to be about normal for Ebay. If anyone with more idea than me could tell me what they think, I’d be grateful.

have you seen thishello everyone , thought I should introduce myself before posting answer below , been surfing for a while but not posted , too busy trying to learn how to take pieces of wood and form something useful
Andy
Assuming you are looking for second hand , could provide you with some links for tool dealers , they don’t have any listed that I can see but that’s because they don’t list every tool available , but you could email them and ask.
I’ve not ordered anything from them , but I’ve read on uk forums that they offer honest goods at reasonable prices , particularly Ray Iles.
Obviously it would be preferential to see before buying but there are none near York that I know of
I tried to navigate Royal Mail website to get postage costs , it seems that within Uk would be approx £8 for next day delivery assuming it could be classified as small parcel less than 1KG ( mine weighs less than 1KG) whereas delivery to Germany would be more like £16 and for 5 day delivery. point is your saving about £8 by being in uk , alternatively you could just get delivered to your home but it costs more , if you want links let me knowbeing first time poster hope I’ve not broke any rules
Regards

I know the Ebay listings are expensive: that’s the problem here though, there is no second hand market I can find (any German reader who knows better please tell me) and the only other channel open to me is Ebay or similar, or buy new which is even more pricey. Worse, I can’t have a good look at the things before I get them.
Hence my hunt for a market or dealer that I can visit or order from in the UK while I’m there.
@peterE Thanks for the offer, please let me know the links, that would be a start…23 July 2014 at 10:08 am #59678@andyingermany there are a couple of decent car-boot sales in and around York, but I’ve never seen any router planes for sale.
You can try these car boots:

http://giantbootfairs.com/wetherby-racecourse-sunday (about 10 miles outside York)I live near York so if you find one on eBay, I’d be happy to receive it and drop it off for you.
24 July 2014 at 8:52 pm #59717I think the last post is a good idea ie delivered to York. You don’t say when you are coming to UK in August.
The two prices shown by your link are way over the top, I bought my stanley 71 for £31 complete and in top condition. It can be luck of the draw……just keep looking at eBay BUT before you come to UK
Best of luck John
Would be interesting to see what you bought always good for a story

http://Www.theoldtoolshed.co.ukI concur with some other posts , eBay prices fluctuate if you have time then you will find reasonable price , I just thought you might want some options as key is your in Uk at specific time.
I enquired with ray Iles http://www.oldtoolstore.co.uk re router and If memory serves me right I was quoted £40 refurbished , ( I think that means sole ground flat) only reason I didn’t go ahead is one came up on ebay that no one seemed to bid on and I won it for £21 plus delivery but when it turned out to have no cutter ( maybe that’s why no bidders, although it wasn’t disclosed and as it turns out I didn’t scrutinise photos as much as I should have) I had to pay further £17 for veritas cutter , and fettle sole myself).
im not knocking eBay merely saying you take a chance , personally I have had mixed bag with eBay ranging from fantastic 043 for £16 to some not so good transactions.
I know I may have made some mistakes (caveat emptor) but there are those that shall we say are less than transparent .best of luck
17 September 2014 at 8:40 pm #90371Many thanks for the tips. No-one in the car boot sale in York had one for sale.
Eventually I found one on Ebay and got it for 25 pounds. I’ll have to wait until Easter for it to arrive with some guests as postage to Germany for that is expensive and risky.
But then I’m having enough trouble mastering dovetails without learning a new tool as well…
