My 17 year old daughter wanted a long board, so I suggested that we should just make one.
We bought rough sawn lumber, using hand tools we cut, planed, and glue-up an over sized panel. Then finished the final shaped with chisels, #4 smoothing plane (for the round overs), and scrapers.
We used shellac to seal the hickory, mahogany, and basswood. Then used oil-based out door poly to add protection.
She got to ride it for the first time today. She was all smiles.

Now that’s a cool long board! Did she do most of the work or were it your hands mostly? I’ve got a few nieces but they don’t even care if you give them some mass manufactured junk or a selfmade thing, let alone join me in making something…
Maybe I’ll show them some spatulas being made.A quick question though : does the finish on her board get really slippery when wet? I could imagine so…

We have been on vacation, just checking in for a moment.
My daughter got to ride her longboard around our hotel on Disney property. She gets lots of compliments everywhere she goes with it.
I took this photo of her holding the long board right off the main sidewalk around the lake at Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort.
