I have tried vinegar, lemon juice and 10% molasses/water. I do find that the molasses solution is slower but requires less clean-up afterwards. I normally keep the vinegar for the times when I want to give a specific patina to hardware.
I also have everything required for electrolysis, but didn’t try it yet.

10 June 2014 at 2:16 pm #58194Yeah the hydrogen part of the process is the reason why I haven’t done it yet. Well, that and the fact that molasses gives very good results.
10 June 2014 at 3:30 pm #58196I have to admit the “electrolysis scares the bejeesus out of me” too! Anything involving a car battery and no car is not for me. I have heard you can use citric acid. Its a powder, often used for canning food I guess. I have been meaning to get some. Just google it. Chris Scwhartz I think wrote about it. Last time I used evaporust. I bought a $5 wooden jack plane and the guy gave me an iron, chip breaker and cap iron to a #4 or 5. It was very rusty. I let it soak for 2 days and it turned out well. I have also been meaning to stop adding to my tool collection too…. I do like using wooden planes over the metal ones now..
10 June 2014 at 3:44 pm #58197I have used electrolysis once and it is not scary at all. I kept it outside the house for the “you never know factor”. It took some time but it worked pretty good.
Hi,
You might (re)consider the electrolysis. Else , it would be a fun to watch this : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QOx5URgjTiU.
If the link does not work , you can try [shopdogsam] on youtube.
I did not tried -it yet (still searching for the electrode) , but , somehow , I think I can trust Shopdogsam. -
