Door Hanging

There are a few things to check before hanging a door. Paul shows how he positions the door in the opening with the correct spacing, well as showing how to layout and recess the hinges into the cabinet. He shows the process of eliminating gaps caused by any movement in the wood, before moving on to fitting the second door and planing the doors to ensure they fit perfectly with a leading edge at the central meeting point.

  2. Paul, your comments about physical exercise struck home with me! In the last year I have shed 40 lbs. (That’s almost 3 stone for my UK friends)! I am almost off of all blood pressure medicine and am working on getting off blood sugar medications. In a large part, all of this is due to the exercise I get trying to do woodworking your way. Keep it coming!

    1. That’s fantastic David – well done ! It is amazing how Paul’s practices and philosophy have changed people’s lives, almost as a ‘spin off’ from what he does. I had the privelege of attending one of Paul’s courses at Penrhyn Castle last May – an experience which set me onto a different path in life. Best wishes.

  6. While watching this episode I noticed the shelves and the saw tooth shelf brackets. I had to go back and make sure that I didn’t miss something. Is there a video on building the brackets? shelves? I am wondering because I would like to see how its done, angles, spacing thickness etc. Thank you for all the hard work.

  7. Hey Paul,

    do you cut the recesses for the hinges on purpose with the cabinet standing upright to keep it related more closely to hanging doors in general or do you feel indeed more comfortable doing it like that?
    Or is it just better to film this way? Many or’s 😉

    I just wondered because whenever I can move things I prefer to have them on the bench or on the floor.

  8. Just a Short Question , How relevant would theses techniques be for constructing a door set for a built in cupboard or would I need to use more traditional rail and style doors?

    1. Hello Glenn,
      Doors made like this would work well for built in cupboards. The aim for this series was to introduce techniques that could be used for a variety of projects, so hopefully that works for you. I’m not entirely sure what you mean by more traditional rail and style doors in comparison to these, so if you need any further clarification, feel free to contact through the tab above.

  10. Really nice video! The thing that impresses me most about Paul’s work methods is his patience. As in this one, he doesn’t mind hanging and removing the doors as many times as necessary to make sure he gets everything just right. That’s probably the best lesson I have learned from him: “Woodworking is not a race!” Thanks and keep the great videos coming our way!

  11. Great series Paul,

    As you had to deepen the hinge mortises on the cabinet to account for the extra 1.5mm gap between the leaves, would it make sense to split the difference and make both the door and cabinet mortises deeper? It would center the barrel of the hinge better. A small difference, but you build with great precision.

  15. I didn’t build this cabinet but this segmant on hanging doors has been an invauable session for me. I’m horrible at hanging doors but I’m sure if I cam muster up the patients of Paul i can improve that skill by practicing the techniques in this video. 🙂

  16. I built my doors with solid wood and they’re pretty heavy. About 12 lbs each. Any guidelines for how many hinges/what size to use? Hardware manufacturers dont’ seem to offer much information on this. Thanks

  17. I’ve been building and hanging doors for 30 yrs. and I still got a couple of useful tips from this video. Pretty easy to fall into the “that’s the way I’ve always done it” routine. Good to see new ideas and methods. Thanks for the insight.

I noticed the shelves installed on the last couple of the door hanging videos and I was wondering if there is a video on making the shelf brackets shown in the cabinets. They look very ingenious and I would be interested in seeing how they were made. Thanks again for all your videos.
