Rocking Chair: Episode 4

The next step is to put the arches in the back support rails using stop-cuts. They are shaped on the front and the back. The shape is refined with the spokeshave and the plane. Then Paul lays out the spindle mortises, making sure to get them accurately positioned in preparation for drilling and chopping them.

I am working on several projects around the house that need to get done quickly, before winter weather makes it impossible. Once done, and finishing the last odds & ends on constructing my workbench, I will be starting on the rocking chair. It is fascinating watching your technique, I am learning so much – I just hope I can come close to your construction quality. I sure will be a lot slower than you but how else can one learn new skills.

Another great one. I like the time lapse, wondering if others may like to see the elapsed full time that we missed, like for shaping the second rail for instance (similar to what is done with the pop up measurement equivalents). Just a thought to Admin?

I agree. Time lapse is great for the repeat tasks, but I’d guess we’re mostly rookies at the spokeshave. (Admin:” can’t please anyone.”)

You used the plane in both directions cleaning up the outside of the curved rails…. I would think in at least one half you’d be going against the grain. Is tear out a concern? Is it somehow alleviated by the curve?

When laying out arches on the chair back, could you have used a symmetric drawing bow (e.g. http://www.leevalley.com/US/wood/page.aspx?p=44631&cat=1,42936,50298) whether store-bought or shop-made and used it to make a template to draw the arcs?
I am enjoying the tutorial and glad you’ve included the repeated steps sped up. Thank you for keeping it simple and attainable for most hobbiest woodworkers.
