With the dovetails complete, the chisel and plane, as well as the cabinet scraper, can be used to clean up the joint. Then we’re ready to cut the housing joint for the back support into the base. Paul takes the time to ensure an accurate fit, using the router to get a consistent depth. The back support, along with the upright and base, can then be shaped.
Why a housing joint in the base, but not one in the vertical?
I’m guessing long grain to long grain doesnt need one but am interested to hear the official reason.
@tomleg & @mxbroome1,
As Max said, you don’t need one for long grain to long grain in this instance. End grain doesn’t glue as well, so the housing provides extra strength. They are both glued and screwed in place, which eliminates the need for clamping and adds strength.
Thanks, Phil
I think it’s because the ‘L’ shaped metal slide that goes under the books has to go into the vertical. How? I do not know.
Paul, what grain and length is the rasp you are using? Thanks for all the work you and your crew do!
@canito79, Paul has written a few posts on the rasps he uses. The Auriou Cabinetmaker’s rasp in the second article is a no 10, and he also uses a smaller no 13 for refining work. We have also been using the fine Tome Feteira one which has been performing great for the price.
