In this episode Paul lays out the mortise holes for the long front and back frames in the end frame posts. Paul chops the shallow mortises, using the router plane to finalise the depths, and discusses the need to work as accurately as possible.
While using the stop cut method, Paul also suggests the option of using the bandsaw to cut the shapes. Paul then cleans up the surface grain using the flat-bottomed spokeshave, a technique that is used to refine both stop cut and bandsaw methods. The tops of the posts require final shaping and finishing and Paul shows the correct way to shape this final element. The top rails are also shaped and Paul takes you step by step through the process, using the scrub and jack planes followed by the #80 scraper and card scraper, before the final glue up and assembly.
Important: Baby safety is a very important issue and many countries and regions have rules on how to keep babies safe. In building this cot we read through our own country’s guidance on this and we have done our best to interpret it and follow it. However, if you build a cot you should do your own research and make sure you follow the relevant guidance. This guidance changes regularly and differs from one place to another. Please do not follow what we have shown without checking it for yourself. The instruction we give should only be used as a starting point for the construction method. Setup, configuration and measurements of the cot you make should be checked to ensure that they are compliant with the guidance relevant to you.
Thoroughly enjoyed this one. While I love all of them, this one in particular seemed to cover new ground as opposed to just the normal joinery. The details on shaping was most enjoyable to watch. This project is looking quite beautiful. Great design!
