Trying to think of something to make for Christmas or a wedding gift perhaps? Paul instructs you on how to make a set of octagonal coasters which have laminated sections of various woods. This is an exacting project requiring a high level of accuracy using a number of skills and techniques we’ve developed through our online broadcasts.
The first stage of this project includes a number of useful techniques for accurately dimensioning thin stock, including the thicknessing jig. Paul then introduces a new clamping system used when laminating thin stock. Once this is glued, he scrapes the laminated piece in preparation for cutting the coasters to size.
The first process in shaping the coasters is accurately cutting and planing them square. Once this is done Paul introduces an ingenious method using a jig to ensure the four corners are cut and planed evenly. The final step is to create a holder for the coasters which is made by cutting some very fine mortice and tenons, then apply the finish of your choice.
