Carved Mirror Frame: Episode 1

Carved Mirror Frame: Episode 1

Paul gets going on the mirror frame, going through stock selection and layout, as well as showing the carved features. The first step is to cut the rebates in the back of the frame to receive the mirror. With that done Paul lays out the mortises and tenons, covering the offset shoulders in detail. He then cuts the mortises using a guide, ensuring to cut accurately to depth and make room for the fox wedged tenon.

Before gluing up the frame, Paul lays out for the carving, firstly on card and then onto the top frame piece. He makes use of a pair of compasses to layout the star and a template for the laurel branches. He then carves out the star, being careful to get refined edges that meet cleanly at an even depth. The leaves are cut out using the gouge, being careful to get crisp and precise cuts.

We’re ready for the fox wedging of the tenons. Paul cuts the kerf in the tenons, then cuts the wedges, before gluing them up, making sure the joints tighten as they are seated. The peak is cut using a sliding bevel to get the angle for the mitre, as well as bevelling two of the edges for appearance. Then the haunches can be removed and cleaned up.
