Blanket chests, also known as hope chests in the USA, were used for storing valued items as well as bulky duvets, quilts and blankets, but you might also use them to store and protect many other family possessions such as photo albums, childrens toys, crafting supplies or indeed your collection of woodworking tools.
Once the dovetail fit has been tweaked, there is a little finessing to be done to the backboard and pegs. Paul discusses the fixing options, then fixes the cap piece and notches the pegs before doing any finishing touches.
The recess template helps ensure an accurate taper and dovetail angle. This is then used to lay out and cut the recesses.
This coat rack or peg rack features is great for developing accuracy. Paul uses a template to lay out the peg shape, using a sliding bevel for the angles and cuts the sliding dovetails.

The top rear up-stand can been recessed and rounded, before it is fixed in place. The the other up-stands are fitted and any additional details considered before the finish is applied.
We’re ready to fit the jaw liners on the vise. Precision fitting is required to make sure they don’t touch the bars and sit in the correct position. Paul adds leather on the outside jaw to increase grip.
With the joints fitted, there’s some adjustments and shaping to do on the shelves. This includes planing them to width, adding an angle on the back and shaping the ends of the shelves.
With the main recess cut, Paul lays out and cuts the housing that enables the shelf to self tighten. He adjusts the fit to ensure it is easily dismantlable, but still strong.
