Thanks! I used Solar Lux Golden Fruitwood dye for the red color, and Transtint Walnut for a dark brown at a 5:4 ratio. And then General Finishes Satin High Performance for the top coat.
I had originally planned to dye, then apply a coat of sand sealer, and then do a contrasting wiping stain to darken the grain, and then top coat. But I mistakenly sanded through the sealer to bare wood and had to scrape it all off and start again. After scraping though, the grain held on to much of the color. So when I re-did the dye, the grain maintained a good amount of contrast, and I decided to skip the sanding sealer and wiping stain.
I had some issues with both the sealer and the top coat pulling some of the dye out of the wood, and you can see some uneven, splotchy areas in the pictures. I’m not really sure how to prevent that in the future.
