I have a 2 speed bandsaw…
I have only ever used it on the higher speed…
I can’t remember where I got this information, but I recall being told, or reading somewhere, that basically it’s the faster speed for wood, the smaller speed for metal.
It was told as somewhat of a generalisation but it seems to make sense, and work.

If you think about it, you can replicate the slower speed, if you need to, by feeding the wood in slower!.
