To reduce the risk of snapping Brusso brass hinges come with a steel screw to be used prior to the brass ones. It has worked for me, also for other brands of hinges.

A photo of three hinges: adding support to that not all hinges are created equal. The left two ones come from a batch I bought over the counter for around $8 a pair. The one to the right I think is closer to Brusso quaility, and were $15 a pair, without screws.
