23 August 2013 at 3:01 pm #16937Hi Martyn,
I’m not sure about the specific compatibility of Record 043 and 044 blades, but Paul has mentioned in the past making his own blades from metal stock. I believe this was the link he used:
http://www.mscdirect.com/product/02005163
He has also put long chisels in in place of the blades in one of his blog posts. It sounds like you can get a lot of different blades to work with Plough Planes.

I’m hoping it’s not too difficult to find/make blades, as I just won a Stanley 50 on ebay myself, and it only has one blade of undetermined size and quality. Guess I’ll find out when it gets here.
23 August 2013 at 9:18 pm #16963The cutters for the two planes are not quite the same. The 43 cutters are smooth, but the 44 cutters have grooves in them; the two planes handle depth adjustment differently. The 43 is adjusted manually, essentially; the 44 uses a screw adjustment mechanism that uses the grooves, much like many stanley block planes. Honestly don’t think the two would be easily interchangeable. You could turn a 43 cutter into a 44 cutter by adding the groove, but don’t think you could then put it back into the 43.
Hey Martin.
If you’re in the uk then Workshop Heaven sell some Ray Iles blades to fit the 43.

£12 for three blades24 August 2013 at 2:19 pm #16984I can check for you when I’m next in the workshop on Monday/Tuesday, as we have 044 & 043 and cutters. Will see what sizes from the 044 can fit in the 043.
Also, you can buy the blades directly from Ray Iles (might be slightly cheaper), although the site is not that easy to navigate. They are a great company:
http://www.oldtoolstore.com/They sell the blades as a set, but from previous dealings with them, I would be surprised if you couldn’t ask to get just the one you want.
Thanks guys,
I have looked on http://www.oldtoolstore.com and workshop heaven but my issue is that I was looking for a 3/8″ iron as I only have a 1/4″ at the moment and the set of 3 only include up to 1/4″.
Phillip that would be a great help if you could check before I get into trying to make some. . . would probably be easier to simply buy a 044 or a larger combination plane.
Thanks !
Martyn
28 August 2013 at 10:28 am #17187Hi Martyn,
I tried the wider blades from the 044 with the 043 yesterday and they seemed to work fine. The bed the blade fits on on the plane is not as wide as on the 044, although this is not really noticeable on the 3/8″ blade and didn’t seem to cause a problem at any point. I went up as far as a 1/2″ blade and it seemed fine, so think the 9/16″ would have been fine too. So I guess you could just get the full set of blades and use them all with the 043 if you wanted, although you might be able to pick a 044 on ebay for the same price as a new set of blades!
Or get this on ebay!

Sorry for the late reply to your helpful search for my answer..
I really must tick the box that gives me e-mail updates on posts!
I found a 3/8 cutter on ebay and bought it and cleaned it up… works great.. may buy a few more as and when I see them cheap so I know I have them but yes very true.. cheaper to buy a 044 with all the bits. I really like my 043 after a few weeks use with it. Very comfortable and it was a bargain. If anyone is straying away from it then I say buy one! (I have small hands and only cut pretty small grooves really so maybe my experience isn’t all that.)
Thanks so much again Philip!
Martyn

Paul really likes the 043 as well. We where talking about it the other day, and I wouldn’t hesitate from getting one of each.
