Adding drawers to an existing cubby hole unit

Hi all

I built the unit pictured a little while ago with the intention of adding drawers to one or both of the centre compartments. Two drawers to each compartment.

What’s the best way to go about this? There will be no rail between the two drawers so is the best way to offset the drawer front so it is below the sides by the thickness of the runners? Hope that makes sense.
