Hi All,
I’ve been very taken with a carving technique used in a canoe making video that shows a very large/wide (greater than 3″ /75mm) gently radiused gouge to create gentle undulations in the wood surface on paddles and seats. Also seen the same technique used to create texture in carved bowls. If you’re particularly eagle eyed, the gouge can be seen here for about 4 seconds: https://youtu.be/ueFiy-uxI4Y?t=927
Here’s the trick, I can’t seem to find anything remotely similar!
Hans Karlsson’s, Ashely Isles and Pfiel gouges aren’t wide enough.I have an Ashley Isles no7 that has worked very well for me for spoons and the like but the gouge used in the videos/technique is definitely about twice the width and much shallower.
I’d really appreciate any suggestions
Thanks in advance!11 April 2017 at 9:53 am #311000I have message but I’m not hopeful, the person that made the video and manages the video isn’t the same person as made the canoe.
If they do come back to me, I’ll let you all know.
11 April 2017 at 11:57 pm #311027Shelter Institute in Woolich, Maine sells timber framing tools. I did not see any large gouges on their website but you could contact them.
How did you estimate 3″? Look at 15:36 where you can compare the gouge to a portion of his curved, smallest finger. You could also compare it to the thickness of the work, although there are perspective effects. Are you sure this isn’t more like a 2″ gouge, perhaps like one of the Ashley Iles Allongee 2″ gouges (http://www.ashleyiles.co.uk/allongee_tools.html)? Also, he is using only a fraction of the gouge for this work.
After watching the video I believe that he using a 2 inch gouge. You can see he has his pinky across the top of it and if its anything like my hands which are pretty average then his pinky is about 3 inches.
Now his pinky is going at an angle so if he straightened it up he would over shoot the side by a knuckles length easy.
12 April 2017 at 8:59 am #311032Its not a gouge but if it really needs to be that wide a small adze might work.
There are who knows how many varieties and you may be able to get them cheaper.12 April 2017 at 10:18 am #311033Thanks for the assistance everyone, based around how difficult it is to get gouges larger than 2″ I think you must be right.
I actually estimated that it was about 3 inches in the same way as you did, but I guess I have massive hands and didn’t think about other peoples hands…. Bit of an oversight that.
If they do get back to me I’ll let you all know.
Thanks again

I’ve had good interactions with Ashley Iles. If you capture a frame of that video and send it to them with the question, “which of your tools is closest to this,” you’ll probably get good advice on sweep if not width. They were very helpful when I had similar questions a few years ago.
You may want to check this link.
It’s a 90mm (3 1/2″) wide gouge 🙂
