If anyone is in need of a bunisher, can’t find some hardened steel tool shaft to use, and doesn’t want to spend a ton of money, check at your local Fastenal. I just picked up a 3/8″ Diameter hardened steel rod about 3″ long for under $2. They seem to be a worldwide company, so this should be an affordable solution for many people around the world. Now I can finally get my used #80 into shape!

Not $2 good, but still much cheaper than almost any other product out there sold as a dedicated burnisher. I don’t have one, but with my experience with some of their other products, I wouldn’t hesitate to buy one.
I think 3 isn’t quite long enough since 1″ would be inside the wood and only 2 sticking out, so it would be hard to hold the tip of the rod and sharpen the blade without getting cut. I would suggest at least the 4″ by 1/2″ since they don’t have in 3/8″ for the 4″ size. I know Paul suggested using a drill bit.
I used a drill bit, but I guess it was to cheap of a bit and the steel is cutting the drill bit and not getting sharp. I will post pictures later.

Everyone has a chisel….
