I am struggling to find shellac around here. What type of varnish or oil would you recommend for a small jacaranda box? I have Danish oil, which I am considering. It just smells bad, does the smell go away after some time? And what would be a good method to apply it?
Please help!
Thanks
Willem
It would help if we knew where you were.
Kremer-Pigmente is a German company with a solid website (he said taking a chance that you are GAlpEE sort of area) that do shellac.
I have used diluted Boiled Linseed Oil on boxes. I have also used diluted boat varnish as well. On both of those, the smell does go away.

I think all finishes have some residual odor. It mellows down over time, but never really goes away. I don’t know if you have access to Amazon, but I found shellac there. It will take 3 to 5 days (usually) to get an order. You being in South Africa might require more time.
danish oil would be perfect for the outside of box apply liberal wait 30 mintuues and wipe of well apply as many coats till you dont see any dry spots i would give 24 hours between coats .clear coat varnish for inside box water-based 2 to 3 coats would work about 4 hours between coats light sand also .oil inside the box is not good as it will always retain its smell.
