I have been searching throurh my woodworking books and youtube but I haven’t found anything on how to raise an arc panel with hand tools. Was it done way back then if so how.
28 September 2014 at 10:19 am #118619I’ve gottn my answer and there are two possible ways. The first is to carve and the second is to use a spoke shave other than that there doen’t appear any other way.
28 September 2014 at 1:30 pm #118621Sorry for taking so long to reply on this Sandy. I knew that there was a thread on here somewhere and it took a while to find it.

29 September 2014 at 3:21 am #118666Sorry about that Salko. I spent an inordinate mount of time trying to find that Masterclasses thread and there is an other member on the forum named Sandy, I completely brain farted when typing my post. 🙂
1 October 2014 at 6:39 am #118749It’s all good Greg I have any of those days.
I think a carving chisel with the same profile curve would be a better choice.
Do you mean an arched profile such as some of the old wooden panel raising planes did. I first these on Roy Underhill’s show, but most of the ones I’ve found on Ebay, etc. were cost prohibitive. I’m actually considering making one myself. If it goes well, I might start producing them for sale. Do you guys think there would be an adequate market? Let me know what you think…

16 November 2014 at 2:13 am #121000It’s an asset for you that you know how to make these but as for the market I think there’s a market for everything but nothing in large quantities though. As you said eBay is cost prohibitive and I haven’t come across a tool maker that isn’t. We all want to get paid what we think were worth but unfortuantely people who have and don’t have don’t want to spend on what the maker think it’s worth so we end up with a surplas of stock and have huge sales in the end.
I would like to have a dedicated raising panel plane and a curved one as well but just a small one would set me back 150 pounds convert that plus shipping $400. That is a lot of money just to hand over.
But don’t listen to me try it and see what happens, however I do know myself if I knew how to make these tools I would be affordable and wouldn’t compromise in quality. No one could then say this is too expensive but that’s me, my goals are to make a humble living whilst enjoying thoroughly what I do.
