Im making a pretty good sized boxed to hold my sister in laws goose feather fan, cedar is what’s traditional in the northwest so that’s of course what im using. We opted for aromatic cedar because the wow factor in comparison to red cedar. Obviously this stuff is pretty soft in comparison to many other wood types but is quite a bit harder than red cedar. Keeping my mind a few steps ahead of the work im wondering about finishes… I noticed a product in local hardware store that’s advertised as a wood hardener. Has anyone used such a thing, and could offer some insight?? I wouldnt mind the darkening that im sure is going to happen, but i’d really like to help this box out against the dings and dents im sure it’s going to incure as she travels the pow wow cercuit in the years to come. Any advice is much appreciated!

But you need to consider a couple things. If you are using the aromatic cedar for the smell and protective properties, this will be covered over with any finish and you will lose all those effects.
If you are just going to finish the outside, that is not an issue as long as the inside remains un coated.
The other option you have is to make the box out of a harder wood and line the inside with thinner stripes of the cedar. This is traditional in a blanket chest.Smell and protection isn’t an issue, just the appearance. And… trying to minimize dings and dents as she’s a somewhat careless young lady.. I’ll look into the Bush oil. Cant opt for a harder wood unfortunately, she made her mind on the aromatics appearance, even though i tried convincing her of some walnut 🙁
