Paul kindly provides links for the files that he uses to restore saw blades, but for some reason, Amazon UK will not ship Bahco mill files to the United States, and I am unable to find the tpi’s for these files online (I am sure that they are listed somewhere).
There are plenty of appropriate mill files to be found on ebay with tpi’s ranging from 23 to 44; does anyone know the recommended tpi of a flat, single cut mill file for topping off saw blades?
Thank you!
8 January 2017 at 5:27 pm #144004Thank you. I plan to get the fine files for sharpening saw teeth from Lee Valley; with respect to the mill bastard files, I was just wondering if 40 tpi was appropriate for removing saw teeth – or if I should look for something coarser?
Paul uses a 40 tpi file to sharpen scrapers; if it’s the same file for saw teeth, then all the better.
8 January 2017 at 10:47 pm #144011I’ve been using the bastard cut file listed on the referenced web page for both scrapers and saws. I’m a beginner at both sharpening scrapers and saws, but it seems to work fine. I’m not sure what tpi it is.
8 January 2017 at 11:06 pm #144012I’m a beginner as well and am picking up tools via ebay for my first project. I’m a confused because the same file that appears as a 40 tpi (teeth per inch) file from some sources can seem to appear as a 26 tpi file from others. Paul uses a 40 tpi file to sharpen scrapers; I was wondering if the coarser file should be used for saw teeth.
I’m sure that you are correct: 40 tpi for both scrapers and files. I bought both as I can certainly used the 26 tpi file for my axes and garden tools.
9 January 2017 at 7:21 pm #144048Lee Valley confirmed that the 10″ mill bastard file #62W33.23 that they sell is from Bahco; it is 40 tpi and they said that it would be fine for topping off the teeth on saws: coarser would be difficult and finer would take a longer time.
Thanks for your responses: I’ve probably learned more about files in the last two days than I thought that I ever would, lol.
