Thanks for the kind comments guys. It really spurs you on when you hit a frustrating part of the project.
I’ve been working on the cabinet some more yesterday and today and feel I’ve hit an important milestone; all the internal dividers are now in place as are all the shelves. My mind is starting to turn towards finishing and at the moment I’m leaning towards shellac or Danish oil. My wife really likes the colour of the cherry as it is so I expect a blonde shellac will be best.
The centre section at the bottom will be a single drawer. I did plan on two drawers but SWMBO has overruled me 😉 . Actually, it’ll be less of a drawer than a box as it’ll need to be removable. I’m hoping to have some fun with a bit of inlay.
I’ve run out of Cherry so the insides are having to be made of of whatever I can find. It’s proving quite a challenge to ensure the different woods all go together.Keep Calm and have a Cup of Tea
20 April 2014 at 12:22 am #56276Looking good Jon. 😉
Looking forward to see a bit of inlay.
Are you just going to use some sort of hole so you can pull draw out ? Or dose draw go far enough back behind doors so you can fit a Knob/handle ?Dagenham, Essex, England
Been chatting with SWMBO as she is getting impatient for this project to finish. We’ve agreed that the box for the inside will be a separate project to be completed later in the year. I got hold of some nice hinges this weekend and have made the handles and the cleat to hang the cupboard up with. I’ve pre finished the insides but have run out of shellac so am having to wait for a new supply before I can complete things.
Work still to do:
1. Finish off the side pieces.
2. Glue up the carcass.
3. Fit the doors.
4. Fit the handles to the doors.
5. Apply shellac to the outsides.
6. Wax, polish blah, blah, blah.I’m definitely on the home stretch now but I have a few charity events to do for the next few weekends (Time to dust off the Dalek and collect for charity) so I’m not sure when this will get finished.

Well, I had lots of time today to get on with this project. I had pre finished the insides to make things a bit easier and today I managed to fit in a two stage glue up so that the entire thing is now more or less complete. I have also finished off one of the doors and I only have to fit the handle to the other door. I have a charity event to attend tomorrow raising funds for Air Ambulance with my Dalek so I won’t be able to de clamp until Monday. I am hoping that there will only be a few bits and bobs to see to before I can mount this cabinet to the wall. I’ll post pics when it’s finished now. I have to say that I’m pretty pleased with the way things are going at the moment.

Hoorah!! The cabinet is now on the wall. I had loads of free time this weekend despite being at a charity event all day Sunday with my Dalek.
I used a button to apply the shellac on the outsides and spent a happy afternoon fitting the doors and polishing the hinges. The wood all feels silky smooth and my wife loves the finished product.
I’m afraid these aren’t the best photos in the world; I got so engrossed with hanging the cabinet that I forgot to take any pictures until it was on the wall. I’m really pleased with the way this has turned out. Of course I’m now on a bit of a downer as I’ve not got a project on the go. It’s a bit like that feeling you get when you finish a really good book and suddenly feel like you have nothing to read.

Thanks for the kind comments everyone. It means a lot when people who know what it takes to do this think you’ve done a decent job.
My ‘job done’ blues didn’t last long: I spent Monday afternoon sorting out my workshop. The new layout is much better and I have better light when I’m working too. That area behind my bench will eventually have a cabinet for the tools rather than a simple board – I think I’m starting to understand cabinets for some reason 😉 Nothing too fancy; just something made out of Pine that I’ll probably paint so I can try out a different finish.

7 May 2014 at 2:11 pm #56876The cabinet looks fantastic! Great work! I especially like the doors with the hand-made pulls.
Well done on the shop clearing front, too. Makes it much easier to start the next project when the bench is clear and everything is back in it’s place.
George.
