Dan, I buy up all the old Diston saws that I run across in the antique stores. They make great gifts to wood working friends. Most of them are rusty and the handles need work but nobody has complained yet.
I don’t have much luck on EBay. There is alway somebody who runs the bids up on most of the items I’ve been entersterd in. So I just hit the antiques stores. 🙂
Sandy,I try to avoid Ebay now, because I think I over pay for some items. This saw, I took a gamble with and think I did ok. I don’t get around to flea markets or antique stores much, which is probably a good thing. I’m going to need to work on a saw till, because these saws seem to be multiplying like gremlins.
Cheers
6 May 2014 at 11:20 am #56807hi Dan i got the spoke shave for £7 and the fret saw for £1 and the drill bits for £3 now i need to get the oil out and start cleaning
6 May 2014 at 1:53 pm #56828I’m just waiting for them to be delivered.
I cannot wait to use tonguing plane.
I’m off sick with back again so frustrating I’m off work but not in any physical shape to do Much. 🙁6 May 2014 at 2:47 pm #56831I am afraid it is getting a regular feature at least couple times a year in my life My back goes into spasm and can make it hard to walk for a few days until I can gradually loosen myself up again.
Seems to happen when a lot of work and stress upon me. Which is getting more regular.
The pain is quite unbearable at times like a 1000volts going through back and legs.
I try not to stay immobile for too long as that can make things worse.7 May 2014 at 12:09 am #56848After a months wait I have been told My Liogier Rasps should be with me by end of week.
That put a big smile on my face.7 May 2014 at 12:34 am #56850Sorry to hear about your back issue but congratulations on your rasp news. I’m thinking of taking the plunge and buying a quality rasp myself. I have a simple Grobet 4-in-hand currently and I use it constantly. It gets the job done but is not capable of fine work and its fairly small. So I have come to the realization that the money spent on a quality rasp will be money well spent.
7 May 2014 at 10:00 am #56866Dan if you have rasp that work for you not to much of a big deal.
All the rasps I have are dull and very old and the old 4 in 1 rasp I have not very good at all.
I do have a Japanese saw type rasp by Shinto have a very course side and a finer side good for flat and convex work but not much good on concave work.
I have bought the starter set which has a 10″ 9 grain cabinet maker rasp , 7″ modeller rasp 13 grain, and 8″ rat tail rasp 12 grain. I also got a 12″ cabinet maker rasp 6 grain.
Hand stitched rasps are expensive and for someone like you Greg who is quite prolific woodworker get a couple of hand stitched rasps wood be an advantage to you.
Problem with me is that it is another type of tool could start me wanting different types like riflers floats and the saw handle rasps look very useful.
If I do get rasps by weekend I let you all know what I think of them. I am sure they would exceed my expectations.I have a Gorbet rasp and it works nicely at removing a lot of material quickly, but it leaves the surface far from finished. But, it’s nothing that a card scraper can’t clean up quickly. The rasp is 10″ and the two files I have are about 6″, so both are functional in different tasks. The hand stitched rasps are definitely a “want.” Trying, albeit not very hard, to not add anymore tools to my till this year… But, it’s not working very well! Lol
