I’m going to make a new front gate.
The gate that is there now is in complete disrepair.
The main reason I have not done this before is that I only rent in the property and also is a shared path to terraced houses.
I got dropped off from work a few weeks back and one of my colleges said to me you are good at woodwork and you have gate like that. I had to explain to him that it’s not my property and so on.
Well it has been niggling me even more since then and frustrates me every time I have to walk through that gate.
So I have been in shed and found enough Meranti to do the job.
I have had to get rip saw out and cut down centre of 4′ 2″x 7 1/2″ x 1 3/4″
I followed gauge lines saw made quite easy work of it just let saw do the work. Before I cut in half I did flattened and got a good face and side with 05 jack plane. Once cut I planned and squared the two halves.
This Meranti has very interlocking grain on the whole did not turn out so bad. I do have a few spots that will need attention of a card scraper or no. 80 cabinet scraper.
I have a design running round in my head see what happens.Attachments:

This Meranti I have pretty soft for a hardwood easy to wallow out side of a mortise. I will have to concentrate a bit more.
I’m off work tomorrow so hope to get the rest of the mortises done and hopefully the grooves as well.
I’m going to make a couple of fielded panels . The Fielded panels will have to be made of pine.
I cannot seem to make anything with out contrasting woods. 😀5 February 2014 at 11:48 pm #27309good luck Mark dont forget everyone that pass’ your house is a potential customer i hope you have a little metal name tag to go on that fabulous new gate no pressure 🙂
6 February 2014 at 12:24 am #27312Eddy, I live in Dagenham I would be more worried about it being half inched cockney rhyming slang for pinched.
That another reason why have been reluctant to make gate before now.
I should carve my name and address in the gate, take a photo if Gate gets stolen goto crime watch and let them say have seen this gate Lol
I am not joking either may have to fix with some security fixings.
About four years ago someone pinched about 20 brass door nockers down our road.
I never got a new brass door nocker bought a wireless door bell instead.6 February 2014 at 1:01 am #27313lol Mark the joys of living in the sunny south east not much better up here btw
6 February 2014 at 3:59 pm #27344I have heard a few things about those scouser’s up there. lol
I overslept today also bee waiting for a parcel which has not arrived.
I have managed todo 6 mortises.
I have also got to decide what plane I’m going to use to plough the grooves.
I have Record 050c 2 Record 405″ Record 044 and Record 043Attachments:

6 February 2014 at 6:28 pm #27359I used a Record 405 I love the wooden knob on the fence really quite comfortable to put the inward pressure you need to keep fence against edge.
On the middle mortise had to chop back with chisel and use a router. The nose of the 405 was to long and did not cut all the way to mortise.
After chopped back I also used a clamp to stop nose of 405 marking wood beyond mortise.Attachments:

Then there are times it can be more dense. The denser wood normally deeper red . The colour can be light pink light brown or sapele like.
Meranti is one off the cheaper hardwoods and quite readily available in the UK
Used a lot for door frames windows e.c.t .
I have used it a fair bit in the past it is not the nicest of woods to use but dose not look to bad when a finish goes on it,Mark,
I’m just up the road from you – where do you get your wood?I’ve got a good supply of oak and chestnut from my local sawmill just two miles away; They’ve also got walnut, but that’s at a premium because the Russians are snapping up all our walnut at the moment.
7 February 2014 at 10:04 pm #27427Hi Bondi That sounds like a half timber yard near you.
I get my timber from http://www.eoburton.com . They are based in Brentwood Essex.
If I am not mistaken they have a branch in Snetterton , Norwich , may be a bit closer to you. http://burtonstimber.co.uk/index.php?categoryid=6 -
