I have been thinking about getting a different dovetail saw. I have an 10 inch Disston. It seems a bit fussy. I have to sharpen it a lot. Sometimes it works great other times it is a pain. I like the Veritas saws. I have a set of carcass saws, that I think I will sell. I don’t use them. I may get the dovetail version but I have been thinking about trying a gent style saw reserved for dovetails. I’m intrigued by them. Anyone have any experience with that style?
8 September 2014 at 11:17 pm #70629I have a gent’s style dovetail saw. It was a relatively inexpensive saw, actually a modern make recommended by Paul in a blog post. It’s not a bad saw, but I find I prefer the regular saw grip much better than the gent style handle in general. I don’t use it much as a consequence even though it cuts just fine.
8 September 2014 at 11:19 pm #70637Gent saws I feel a bit light weight.
Also hard to keep in same position in hand each time you pick up saw.
I prefer open handle on backed saws up to 10″
Closed handle 12″ and up.
If you get a Veritas dovetail get the 20 tpi the 14 tpi feels a little catchy to me.
I have a 10″ 20tpi PAX open handle Dovetail saw, 9″ 14 tpi Veritas Open handle Dovetail saw, and a 8″ 20 tpi Spear & Jackson Dovetail saw closed handle.
I also have a 6″ 24 tpi PAX Gents saw.
My preferred saw is the PAX 10″opened handle Dovetail saw the weight comfort and smoothness of cut do it for me.8 September 2014 at 11:19 pm #70638Gent saws I feel a bit light weight.

I would probably go for the Veritas, 14tpi. Its easier to sharpen. I will try to find a gent saw on the secondary market. Normally they are in bad shape. I do find them intriguing. With dovetails I started doing pins first too. Just changing everything!
