Hello,
are brass screws as expensive in the UK&US as they are here? Here in home depot I pay around 1 Euro per screw. They are already polished but they don’t seem to offer the rougher ones Paul showed how to tune-up in his blog which are probably not as expensive.
Hi Florian.
Coming to woodworking through the door marked “boat building,” I’ve used a lot of fasteners from “Jamestown Distributors” in Rhode Island. Most of my fasteners from them have been silicon bronze which is stronger and more durable than brass, and slightly more red in color. I just checked their screw fastener category and find #10 by 1″ silicon bronze screws at $22.50/100. Brass of similar size is about $21/100. Here’s a link to their screw fastener page.
Of course, I’m sure there are many other suppliers with similar prices in the U.S. I mention Jamestown only because of my very good experience with them. I have no other connection with them.
Thanks, Bob and Ken! Ken, never complain about the price of timber again. Bring your brass screws to Germany, sell them for the local price and buy some oak before you go back home. A win-win-situation 😉
Bob, I found your blog while doing some research on the frame saw. Maybe you would like to share your experience in a thread here on how to build one. I think many of us would be interested!
