I think the esthetics of using dowels is a great touch, many would think that they conceal screws but little do they know that that isn’t the case, the Japanese use wooden nails as back in the day true nails were very expensive that is the reason why they have no fasteners in their joinery and thankfully kept that tradition. I aspire one day to be on par with them, it’s what I’m working towards.
Shellac by far is my favourite finish above all and mostly the only one I use. Neil from Ebeaut here in Australia is a fore most expert on shellac and oils invented a new type of shellac that has all the properties of shellac but equaling in durability to polyurethane. He has an unbelievable range of products that I swear by them as there is no word to describe them but just brilliant. He’s written a book on Polishing which always get’s sold out proving it quite difficult to get hold of, I’m hoping to get my hands on it as you never know with this guy what new techniques and finding he has to offer.

This project looks great. Cudos.
So Im going to be starting a similar project, making a frame and panel tool cupboard similar to the ones paul uses.
I’m clear on everything except one thing. What is the best way to put the bottom and shelves into a cabinet like that. I was going to cut dados in the end panels to accept the bottom and shelf.
Should I also cut a dado in the back of the front rail to accept the panels as well? This will be used for tools so weight is a concern.
I want these cabinets to be very similar to Paul’s, I’m just not sure how he attaches the bottom and shelves. Thanks so much for sharing your projectRyan
