I know Paul loves his cabinet scraper. But when I try to use mine it often chatters when I push it forward and it leaves fairly deep parallel marks in the wood. What am I doing wrong? I have sharpened the blade and installed it using the video by Paul’s son as my guide.
To things occur immediately from what you have described:
First your ‘sharpening’ – in reality a turned razor-sharp hook of metal – may be too aggressive for the density of the wood you are scraping. Ideally a scraper is a finishing tool, removing the finest of shavings. A solution is to hone the sides flat to remove the old set and apply less pressure/angle with your burnisher forming the new edge. As with most things its a bit of trial and error until you get the right feel.
Secondly if a chatter is inevitable as is sometimes the case – hardness of the wood, wavy grain orientation etc., try applying a skewed approach to your strokes and less hand pressure.
Hope that this helps.
