Hi all! I’m looking to buy Paul’s famous Thorex 712 hammer, but it seems it’s not available in Canada. Amazon.com can’t ship it to my address (Quebec province), amazon.ca doesn’t list it, and the few dealers I found have extravagant international freight costs (around 50$!).
Any Canadian here who was fortunate enough to find one? Or would anyone have a recommendation for an equally good hammer? Thanks for the help!
Try Vaughan Hammers http://www.vaughanmfg.com
They have basically the same hammer and from what I can see they ship to Canada.
Esquif,
The Thorex and similar are really nice but if difficult to get in Canada you may consider this from Lee Valley:http://www.leevalley.com/US/wood/page.aspx?p=50229&cat=1,41504,43688
I have one of these faced with leather on the Oak inserts and like it very much.
Best,
Craigeven shipping within the US, vaughn hammers are really expensive.
I picked up one of these Estwing, soft face hammers for about 15 or 16 dollars at Home Depot. The other nice thing is that Estwing are made in the USA, not to mention they are reasonably priced and are available.
@esquif If you are looking for a decent set of chisels for cheap, consider Irwin marples, also sold at home centers. I’m not sure if Home Depot has them, because I bought mine at Menards. I bought a set a couple years about,3 chisels for 20 dollars I think, and I’m quite happy with them. I have since bought vintage chisels and a set of Buck Brothers (NOS made in Millberry Ma) However, I continually go back to the Irwin Marples, because the feel nice in my hands, hold a decent edge and are easy to sharpen.
12 December 2014 at 10:43 pm #122129I bought the 7 piece Narex set off of the discount table. Someone had returned them. I’ve been very happy with them. I think I paid about 60 bucks for them.
I’ve got an old soft faced mallet from the ’40’s. I had some black locust left over from a turning project so I made new faces for it. I’ve got one with the wood and one covered with leather. However since I made my oak mallet I haven’t used it much.
If you check on eBay (US), there is an eBay store called BigRedToolboxUSA. The link is: http://stores.ebay.com/bigredtoolboxusa?_trksid=p2047675.l2563
They not only carry the Thorex 712 chisel hammers and replacement heads, but they also carry Bahco products like Paul’s axe and the wonderful Stanley 598 knife and replacement blades. Best of all, they have free shipping both on their US and their UK products. I don’t know for sure about Canada, but it’s worth a look.15 December 2014 at 3:41 pm #122194@esquif sorry its taken so long to get back with a price, here goes

1 712 wooden handled hammer (plastic handled hammer comes with 2 hard faces) £12 24 CAD

31 December 2014 at 4:04 pm #122880Are you able to use Amazon? That is where I obtained my Thorex Hammer and as mentioned they also sell the Stanley folding knives pretty cheap as well.
