Just finished a white oak & purple heart coffee table for my daughter. It’s a very simple design (her choice) with angled legs similar to the blanket chest project and a top oak border with breadboard ends and draw-bore tenons. A center support rail sits in a housing dado with through tenons to maintain stability of the long-side rails.
You’re right David, there is a joint. The top is overall 24″ and I found a 14″ piece that I ripped down and edge jointed. I had really intended originally that the tenons be through tenons, but purple heart is so brittle that I chose not to risk having a visible fractured edge so the tenons go about 1-5/8″ into the 2″ ends. Making the dowels was a little tricky, again because that stuff is brittle, but it worked out. Thanks for the kind words guys. This goes with a couple of end tables and a bookcase/TV stand I made for her.
