About 100 years ago my grand father made a simple high lamp table for my grand mother. Its one flaw has been that the top has cracked several time over the years. In high school wood shop my father, now 85 made a chess board veneered and inlayed. As luck would have it I come from a long line of borders and both these pieces have come to me. For my dads 86th birthday I am planning on putting the chess board on the table as the top.
Because the chess board was not cared for or ever refinished the different veneer woods dried and contracted at different rates. Can anyone suggest a filler for between the squares that will not be so conspicuous as to detract from the wood?
Hi Michael
Before I start give any advices (my advices is not always great), may I see how it’s look)).
Cheers

Maybe I’m being a bit too ambitious, but what if you used brass inlay strips to fill the gaps? Use a fine kerf saw to clean-up the gaps and make them into grooves for the inlay. Just a thought 🙂
