Please bear with me, I am a novice and this is my first project…
On the first vidio the width of the boards for the back and the sides are not given and from the cut list it states the finish size is 12 3/4″ so presumably one would need to use boards at least 6 1/2″ thick. Is this a standard size. if not what needs to be asked for?

You need to edge join some boards together then trim to final size. Two 1×8 are likely the widths you will be using as they are usually around 7 1/4 inches wide. Once edge joined you can rip the piece to 12 3/4.

Oh, and welcome to the forums and classes 🙂
