You probably mean “without chipbreaker”? In this case, definitely yes. the main differences between scrub planes and smoothing planes are the size of the mouth – wider for scrub planes, and the missing chipbreaker on scrub planes. Therefore scrub planes can swallow much thicker shavings. I think, there is even an article or video by Paul Sellers about converting a smoothing or jack plane into a scrub plane.

Anyways, I bought this piece of junk from Harbor Freight for $15.

Based on the pics I am seeing on the parts breakdown it seems to have a lever cap and blade.
Then I bought a semi-toasty #4 Stanley Bailey from ebay for $28.

7 January 2017 at 12:30 am #143953You could turn the Harbor Freight plane into a scrub plane. Open the mouth a little and put a camber on the iron.
Yes a No.4 can be converted into a scrub plane. You do not need to remove the cap iron. Though if you can obtain a common thin common wooden coffer plane, the thinner (width wise ) are easier to find a wooden block plane. Cheaper and better option, though this is only a personal opnion, best of luck which ever route you take cheers Peter
