Hi,
May may someone share tips on using Paul’s Mortising technique for cutting dovetails mortises through an upright bench leg?
I have not mastered Paul’s technique, however, I am on my way. It is the cleanest and the simplest method I have come across.
The wedge lock dovetail will be used for the rails on a workbench. I have attached a diagram of what I am trying to achieve.

Thanks,

I think it would be a fairly easy thing to do, other than the sweat to chop out the mortise to begin with. I’d chop a normal square mortise to the width of the narrowest dimension of the dovetail. Then pare down the wide end to make the dovetail angle.
The great thing about it being wedged is that it wouldn’t have to be very precise. Just enough for the dovetail stretcher to fall into, and then the wedge and the shoulder on the stretcher will do the rest.
Good luck!
I agree with Derek.
Also, the joiner’s mallet project had a tapered mortise. You may want to look at that project for tips.
