A friend of mine has a classic car, and the existing dash plate has a dark face and brass look trim and bezels. He has asked me to see if I could cut a solid wood piece. He has been shopping online and at a couple local stores and likes the look of wenge. I have not worked with it, but I was explaining about creating a book match using 1 x 6 and ripping in half, but he seems to like the look of a solid one piece wide board finished to approx 10″ x 40″. He is expecting about 3/8 or so finished thickness. I am concerned with several things, flatness, wood movement and splitting just a few. It’s not a difficult project, but just thought this a good place to start to ask.
I am heading out unplugged for the weekend, so I won’t be able to check for replies, pointers, etc until Sunday night. If any one has any input on a project such as this, would be appreciated.

Personally I have always liked the look of birds eye maple veneers in cars.
Very hard wood Denise, scraper far better than plane, and the grain was very tight, however it has a soft layer and a hard layer which creates a very interesting pattern. The piece I had was just over 10″ wide, and had 20 growth rings per inch!!! It was really a great exercise in creating symmetry with my rasps and files (no joints, just holes) but I loved the shaping aspect. I did have to rout out a section of the back for some switches, so it gave me a chance to use the chisel/hand router too. (And I did wear leather gloves just in case)
