Well, I finally bit the bullet and retired my waterstones for diamond plates. I’m very pleased with the way they’re working out so far. On a whim, I also bought a set of four diamond lapping sheets.
These are 10, 3, 0.5 and 0.1 micron particle size. They are about the equivalent of 1000, 8000, 15000 and insanely fine. They polish a blade really quickly. I do about 10 strokes on each. Actually, I think the only ones that are really useful are the 3 and 0.5 micron. The 10 is about the same as my extra fine diamond plate and the 0.1 is overkill for wood working tools.
The disadvantages are that they are fairly delicate and I’m not sure of how long they will last. But man, do they give me a razor sharp blade quickly!
Sounds great, Peter. I’m unfamiliar with the lapping sheets. Do you have to wrap them around a leather-covered piece of wood to use them? Or do you simply place them on a flat surface and pull your blade over them?
They have a peel off back with adhiesive. I sanded a piece of plywood smooth and put a few coats of shellac on it to get a smooth surface. You could also use glass or plexiglass or I guess any flat surface. Here’s the link to the ones I bought:
