Today I finished the largest dovetail joint (14 and a 1/4 tall panels) I’ve ever made in my woodworking journey that started this past December. I made numerous dovetail boxes with pretty good success since then, but today was a little disappointing. When I fit the joint, a small 5 to 6 inch crack appeared in the side of the larger panel. I’m guessing I made the dovetails too tight? I’ve made the other boxes just as tight but without any cracking issues. I’m wondering if more dovetails could have also been the issue? I accidentally cut the dovetails on the larger panel instead of the smaller one (don’t know if this matters). I’m working with 3/4 inch pine. Actually, the thickness of the panels are more like 5/8 because of planning them flat. Any fix for the crack? The crack by the way runs straight down from the corner of a dovetail and is no bigger then 1 or 2 millimeters.
I’ve used Chair Doctor glue for fixing cracks. I’s quite thin and wicks into the crack. Clamp it until the glue sets and you’re good.
