I like the color (federal blue isn’t it). Also like the way you’ve added more storage space then one usually sees in this style chest. Should be handy to use, good work!
30 May 2014 at 6:34 am #57689Yes, it’s federal blue. I comes as a powder that you mix with water. I’ve used it on a few project and I really like the way it looks (kind of traditional rural look.)
I really like using this chest. I have the chest set up on my work mate right behind where I stand at the bench. Tools are close to hand and its easy to put them back when I’ve finished with them. I don’t have to bend over as with a floor chest and that’s important to me at my age. It helps me stay organize and I need all the help I can get with that.
I’ve got a few projects to get done and then I’m planning on building a stand for it with casters.
11 January 2015 at 8:38 pm #123396I’ve been using this chest for several months now and I thought some of you might be interested in how I ended up fitting it out.
I added a base on casters which makes it easy to move and provided some storage space for some of my tools with tails. I had some sheet brass and used it to make a place for pencils etc. and built boxes for my joinery planes as well as some trays for smaller bits and pieces. I then added a drawer under the top shelf for some of the large things. This left enough room under the drawer for the rest.

14 January 2015 at 3:56 pm #123514Peter that turned out really nice, I also like that style. I am actually going to build one a little smaller and the one Paul is currently building. I want one for the shop permanately and one that I can take when I travel.

I find it very easy to work out of. I’m not good at keeping things organized. It helps me to have the tool chest behind me as I work so I can get my tools or put them away as I go along.
I’m also looking at building something similar to the current project, although probably changing some of the dimensions. I do a fair bit of picture framing and need something to store my framing and mat cutting tools and supplies.
19 January 2015 at 11:05 pm #123680Nice, solid and very useful! I currently do not have a tool chest and I like very much your Dutch style tool chest. Plenty of room to keep tools organized. Really inspiring project. Thank you for posting!
