Very nice Record vice.
I have one of those I’ve had my one for 29 year last 22 years not been on a bench until very recently. Your vice dose look a little older than my one. Should serve you well.Good find Mel. I’ve been monitoring the big auction site (U.S.) prices on Record vises, which are upwards of $250+! I am not actively looking for one right now, but certainly would not pass one up should I find one in the wild for say, $125 or less. I will not be holding my breath until that happens.
Wow that big bucks. They can go on ebay uk for as little as 20 uk pounds. I think sometimes its a local pickup only and the buyers are not close enough. I only paid 15ukp for that one after a bit of negotiation. I did wait a while for one in good condition to turn up but I do love hunting for things at boot sales.
21 May 2013 at 9:29 am #12246I have the baby one 52 D only opens up about 8″ take what I Have on the jaws off just over 6″. In any case would not be able to fit bigger vice.
Even the one I have costs about Β£120 new Irwin Record. I did hot think they cost that much either.
I keep getting confused how do you spell vice / vise ?
21 May 2013 at 12:59 pm #12253“The United States and Great Britain…two countries separated by a common language..”
Don’t know if that’s the exact quote or not, but always makes me chuckle.
Over here in the US, we definitely use VISE to refer to tools and VICE to refer to bad habits or moral failings…but I’m sure everyone on *this* board will have no illusions about which of the two anyone may be referring, regardless of the spelling. π
Even those of us who may enjoy a good dram now and then…
Vise/Vice, Mortise/Mortice. I have to remember to also search for “vice” on eBay or Craigslist because of alternate spellings.

Nice gloat. π I am a terrible negotiator. I would have given them 25 UKP just so I didn’t feel guilty.
In Los Angeles, you cannot even buy an decent old Morgan, Yost, Wilton, Columbian, or even a nicer Craftsman vice without paying at least $40-$60. Most people ask $75-100 USD or more, and thats for a vice that needs some de-rusting and a paint job.
Woodworking vises are pretty rare in Los Angeles compared to bench top vises and most other Mechanic tools.
this only cost me Β£10/$15.14 a great Ebay find i did have to drive 100 mile round trip to collect it but i guess thats only round the corner in the USA, proper mission here in th UK
You guys have to stop this now before I weep.
Eddy- 100 miles round trip is commuting distance for many in Los Angeles!
21 May 2013 at 4:42 pm #12258sorry scot but we have four countries one time zone not four counties to each time zone
21 May 2013 at 7:56 pm #12267The prices of tools in the UK are so low that we’re planning a rust hunting weekend with a friend.
Eddy, 100 miles round trip is also becoming the normal daily commute on this side of the channel. I am currently lucky enough to “only” have a daily 60 miles round-trip across a border.
Yeah – but what is the cost of gasoline in the UK? π
I spent $15 USD one weekend for gas to go to a swap meet. Picking was slim, so I only spent $10 while I was there. π
Bought a usable 1-1/4″ gouge and Stanley 65 marking gauge (triangular head w. pin expertly ground to a knife tip), which has become my new favorite gauge, so all was not lost.
23 May 2013 at 1:04 pm #12407Yeah that’s why we hope to do the round-trip on one tank from a cheaper gas area π
That is one nice gauge!
