    best way to protect wood for outdoor use in this case trim on shed doors….have thompson’s water seal but i know i can’t paint it later if needed so looking for other options. any help would be appreciated.

    you want a marine/outdoor oil based varnish, look at what they use on boats and you can’t go wrong.

    Don,
    Nearly all manufacturers maintain a tech service/applications staff to answer questions.
    Easily found under “contact us” on their web page.
    I called. Thus:

    The Water Seal and the Multipurpose products can be topcoated with an oil based paint after 48 hrs drying.
    These are both clear products with Mineral Spirits as the solvent.
    To top coat with latex you’ll need to wait 45 days to allow the volatiles to escape.
    None of the other products are paintable.
