First attempt with my oak coffee table top, two coats of the zinnser (no wax) shellac. Cheap bristle brush was used to apply, sanded with worn 220 between.
Love the way it came out, not sure what else I may do, may follow same as Paul did in the video, but have to get the rest of the build done first.
Looks like you did a fine job on that top Brian. I look forward to seeing the completed table. Be sure to keep us posted.
Thanks Greg, our house is on the market so we’ve had to clear out for showings evenings and Saturdays, does not always make for productive time in shop, not to mention all the cleaning and clearing out of stuff… Oh boy. Looking to get it complete before I have to pack the shop.
One thing you may consider is a more durable top coat if you have kids or Grandkids. Perhaps a lacquer or poly. Things tend to get spilled on a coffee table and shellac dosen’t hold up to a lot of abuse.
For a more durable finish I like Bob Flexner’s “wiping varnish”. If you google it, you can probably find an article. Its 2 (or 3 parts) oil based poly and 1 part paint thinner. Its super easy to put on, durable, and feels nice.
