Hi all,
I’ve just started with hand tools and made my first wallclock dado the wrong width. At first it was too narrow, so I attempted to ‘fix’ the problem by making another knife wall and chopping down with a chisel, but now the dado is too wide. Any tips for fixing this or should I just start over? The dado is just a tiny bit too wide. On, the flip side, I was quite pleased with my new hand router. It’s the first time I’ve ever used that tool and it made my dado nice and clean. 🙂

25 January 2014 at 12:19 am #26481Thanks. I think I will take your advice and start over with that board. Gives me some practice with the handsaw, too. 🙂
I’ve cut 7 or 8 more practice dadoes since my initial post. I have a tendency to make them too narrow, but I think I’m getting better at least. My latest dadoes are close enough that a few swipes with the plane does indeed fix it up.

I agree with the decision to remake the board. You will feel better about it in the long run.
Another good practice…if its your first try or its been a while, I always do a a practice joint before jumping into a project. Dadoes, dovetails and plowed grooves especially.
