Well I have nearly made a Dovetail box.
I can not believe how slow I am.I have enjoyed every minute. Dovetails not 100% but not too bad. Better than a set I done a few months back.
I’ll put some pictures up soon.5 May 2013 at 2:53 pm #11649Well, this is my creation.
The sides are Walnut with an Ash Dovetail motif, ends are Pine and the base is Merranti.
I was going to leave it open. I thought what the hell I think I’ll put an Oak lid on box. Going back in shed to plane and glue up some Oak for lid.Attachments:

Made my lid, used a rebate plane for the first time in years.
I can see a Maple handle coming up next.
Really enjoyed my self the last couple of days. Shame it cannot last.Attachments:

Yep its been fun and a good learning experience using all different woods.
I forgot how hard oak is.6 May 2013 at 4:46 pm #11682Well I have finished construction of Dovetail box.
I put an insert of Douglas fir same size as pin on Dovetails.
Made my Maple handle. I cut rough shape with coping saw, used a gouging chisel to make hollows on each side. I used a rasp then 80 grit abrasive with 2 different size dowels finished with 240 grit. That handle took a bit of doing 😮
Now I have to finish I may have to get a better brush for french polish.Attachments:

Cut out shape of Dovetail and pin out of solid wood to about 3/16th 4mm thick.
Alined in middle of side or end marked around with sharp knife, to make knife wall.
Then applied Paul’s Knife wall method and very carefully chopped down about 1/8th 3mm.
Put a bit of glue in recess tapped Dovetail and Pin shapes of wood into recesses. I then wiped excess glue off. Used I finely set block plane to bring to same level on sides. On the ends I paired down with a chisel as the ends were an after thought as base was already glued in place. I then finished with a cabinet scraper and 240 grit abrasive.7 May 2013 at 4:45 pm #11710Thanks Ken.
Just put my first coat of polish on, it sure dose show up your imperfections.
Not bad for my first attempt to make something in years.
Had my few days off now back to long hours of work cannot wait till I get more time off hopefully I’m not too tired.
Post some picture when finished. -
