I am from NY and we just weathered 4 big storms that left all kinds of green hardwood all other the place. So I took a nice chunk of Norwegian Maple and cut it down to nice solid blocks and was planning on using it for a bench top. Had read online that Christopher Schwartz was going to try making bench from greenwood, saw a few blog posts about him starting it, but could find nothing more. So I am wondering if anyone else has tried this and if so what happened? Thanks
I’d be afraid that a bench top made from fresh, wet, green wood would cause all kinds of grief. The top is thick, so it is going to take a long time to dry out in the shop. If you’re using the bench in the mean time, you’re going to be putting dried wood on top of a wet bench and I’d be quite concerned that your nice, flat, dry wood will cup like crazy. Notice that, in the article Larry linked to, it says, “When the top came into our shop it had been sitting outside for several years and it was at about 15 percent moisture content.” Your trees just came down. They’re going to be much wetter than that, won’t they?
I’m only guessing.
