It is done, it is gone, it is sitting happily in it’s new home 🙂
The main body of the bench is made from cedar with dowel pin construction and hardboard panels. The bench top, sides and top are poplar and the bench lid is pine. I hand carved the initials on the little plaque which I inlayed into the bottom of the lid. The color is “Pringle’s Can” red and was chosen by the buyer’s wife. I was really concerned over their choice of color, but seeing it in their house, it really did look good and fit nicely with their furnishings. I think she is going to put some medium grey cushions on the bench.
It took me a little under two months to build due to illness, injury and family obligations. And for those who are wondering, yes, this is what had the warped lid I asked about a while back. I ended up buying one of those pre-made pine panels from a big box store to make a new lid. It was cheaper than buying all new poplar and time was getting short.
All-in-all this was a very fun project to do. I’ve always wanted to do one of these, but never had the room to build it until recently. This is the biggest project I’ve ever attempted and it gave me a chance to use a lot of the techniques I’ve learned here at the Masterclasses.
Thanks to everyone here for your help and suggestions. I couldn’t have done it without y’all 🙂

Very nice work. Great proportions / pleasing to the eye. We’ll done and thanks for posting.22 March 2015 at 2:10 pm #125821Wow, very nice George! You should be proud, that is not a small project.
23 March 2015 at 1:05 am #125830Dang, George. That looks fantastic. The red color is a little startling, but the piece looks well built and should last a lifetime.
23 March 2015 at 9:53 am #125838george that would look good in any hallway congratulations on a job well done, i bet you customers will enjoy having this in their home.
23 March 2015 at 2:31 pm #125844Fantastic work, George! The colour isn’t to my taste but the design and build quality is great. Well done!
George.

Your customer really knows her mind, I’d say it’s better to be left questioning her taste than trying to deal with someone who doesn’t really have a clue what they want. She obviously knew what she was looking for and I’m glad that, er, bold colour looks good in the house.
What happened to the old lid? Last I heard you had managed to caul out the twist.
Matt
24 March 2015 at 3:27 am #125854Sadly, it wasn’t able to be totally un-twisted. After I put all of the cauls on it, it still twisted up by about 1/4″ on one corner. I even tried using magnets to hold it down, nothing worked. I had to admit defeat and get another one. Oh well, I have 40″ x 18″ of 3/4″ poplar I can use for something else…. after it’s planed square again 😛
Here’s a pic of the old lid after it became a temporary work surface for painting.
