I am considering buiding a hammered dulcimer. There is a lot of stress on the frame due to all the strings being tightened (similar to a piano). The plans I saw recommend a notch because it will draw the frame together when in tension. Does this look acceptable or do i need to pursue some sort of M&T or dovetail?
I think you need to offer a little more information; I for one can’t picture which joint you’re talking about. I have never even seen a hammered dulcimer before, so that perhaps should not come as a great surprise.
If you’re sure the plans are from a reputable source, there’s probably no harm in following them. I must admit that the words you have used – “notch pulling the frame together” – leave me feeling suspicious, but without more detail it’s really very difficult to judge.
I might also suggest that this is not perhaps the best forum on which to inquire, being more concerned with joinery and furniture-making than the specifics and intricacies of musical instrument making. If there are members here who can offer you advice I look forward to having that assumption proved wrong.
