Hello, I recently bought a hand drill and the 3 jaws have only 2 springs inside them it seems to have had 3 but is not there. How do I repair this I don’t even know how to remove those jaws inside there and from where to get a replacement spring and how to put it back with the springs. Does someone have experience fixing this? Thanks for anyone helping.

The chuck unscrews from the shaft.
You,ll probably need to use some penetrating oil to unscrew the bottom of the chuck from its body.Measure the spring length, dia.and wire size using a digital caliper.
McMaster-Carr carries all sorts of springs.
Search their catalog for:
“Precision compression springs”.
Hopethis helps.
Best,
CraigHi, thanks Craig. I unscrewed the chuck from the shaft. But I don’t manage to remove the bottom it does not have any holes or slots. Even tho I tried what you said with oiling it and I tried to force it open with 2 pliers and it wont budge, like it seems to be 1 piece. This is weird why would the chuck be manufactured and sealed somehow that it cannot be opened ever again?!

It will also loosen old grease that got hard. Then use a penetrating oil liberally inside and out. Let it sit a bit.
Put the chuck in a vise ( wrap leather around it) then use channel locks or vice grips to unscrew it.
Some chucks didn’t have holes or flats. Nobody thought somebody would try to fix it 100 years later. There isn’t a setscrew on the side of the chuck, is there? If so, remove it.
Here’s another source for Jaw Springs:
http://www.johnstonestools.co.uk/acatalog/Hand_Drill_Springs.htmlYou may need to smooth the inside of the chuck with some fine abrasive paper, to enable the jaws to open smoothly. They often stick against the inside of the chuck.
