I’m looking to buy a few more blades for my planes, to sharpen at different angles.
Found some cheap ones at $4.5 from stalnlytoolparts or some even cheaper blades from ebay. But there are also hock blades, by Ron hock, for some $40.
Does someone know what I’ll be missing if I buy the “cheap” stanley ones?
Thanks
17 October 2017 at 2:50 pm #335772I bought a brand new plane from a local woodworking shop for $45US. Its the best working plane I have. Sharpens well and keeps it’s edge as well as any. So my guess would be to go with the cheaper ones.
17 October 2017 at 10:37 pm #335992I don’t have any experience with the new Stanley replacement irons. They’re probably Ok but not great quality. eBay is a good place to look for older Stanley plane irons and chip breakers. Some of the older irons are very good quality. I have a couple of Hock replacement irons made from A2 steel. They work well and hold an edge for quite a while. Also, they’re not so thick that you have to do a lot of fettling to your plane, possibly just file the mouth a touch wider.
Keep in mind that sometimes the thick irons do not work as replacement blades. I put a Hock blade on my #8 and the blade was so thick that the depth adjustment pin could not reach the cap iron. I found a way to use the blade, and it cuts nicely, but it was a bit of a pain. I suppose most people don’t encounter this, or we’d hear more about it, but it can happen.
Did you check Lee Valley for replacement blades?

I do have a Hock blade (O1) in my smoother and it is very nice.
I did try to get Ron Hock to make an angled blade for my moving filletster, but he discouraged me, saying I would be better off buying a used iron, and that’s what I did.

I ended up deciding to buy a “new” used plane on eBay. The $70 for a blade+chip breaker can get me a nice plane.
