It’s my fault…I went el’cheapo on hinges for my drill box which is part of my tool chest project currently underway. Built the box, perfectly square rebated panels and all, sawed it in half and only minor planing required to get a very tight join between the two halves. Then I installed the hinges and there is now a 3/16 inch gap at the back… Will cutting the hinge mortice deeper resolve this issue? I cut the mortice to make the hinges flush with the edge of the back.

You can cut your mortices deeper but I don’t think you’ll like the way it looks. Before you cut them deeper I’d consider buying better hinges…

Dave-
I bought some nice narrow hinges for a small cabinet from Lee Valley, but I still had to make my mortise slightly deeper than the leaf thickness in order to minimize the gap. Below is a picture. This was my first time installing hinges, so please forgive my results.
Brusso has thicker leaves, but I am not flush with cash to by Brusso hardware for my projects.
