Hi!
Hot hide Glue/animal glue is very inexpensive here (Portugal), but I don’t know what to buy and the man in the store doesn’t understand this system192 gram Strength – Marquetry
251 gram Strength – Cabinetmaking
315 gram Strength – High stress
from
https://www.toolsforworkingwood.com/store/dept/TK/item/MS-HIDEGL.XXI need some help to “translate” the names from US/UK to Continental/European language… or Portuguese/Spanish
Fine-tools.com in Germany calls it “Bone Glue” (no reference to “strength”)
In here the used names are something like
Fish glue
Rabbit glue
Animal glue (the strongest just my gess) – (grude -portuguese name)I know about:
Tidebond hide glue – just on-line and more expensive
Old brown – geting it from US the taxes make it twice expensiveThanks in advance!
26 November 2014 at 2:00 pm #121474The animal glue is what you want. The fish and rabbit glue have there uses but not for woodworking. Rabbit glue is mostly used for book binding and paper applications. Fish glue could be used but has less strength than animal glue. Do they offer different grades of animal glue where you are? If not, the glue offered is most likely closer to the 251 gram strength. Any will work for furniture as long as your joinery is well executed.
Keep in mind that hide/animal glue begins to set very fast. So you will have to plan your assemblies carefully. It begins to tack and grab as soon as it begins to cool. The liquid hide glue gives you longer open/assembly times. Longer than PVA glue. You can make your own liquid hide glue from hot hide glue and that may be a good option for you. I’ve not tried it myself but here is a link. The instructions are at the bottom of the article.
http://www.popularwoodworking.com/article/hide-glue-in-liquid-formHi Greg, Thanks for the help.
The people I’ve talked too, know nothing about animal glue grades.
And I see my problem wasn’t very well exposed.
I want:
– liquid hide glue for longer time assembly.
– Animal glue for non toxic glue, (like toys)Perhaps I’ll go the same road as You did Greg, just buy some Titebond Hide Glue
26 November 2014 at 3:44 pm #121492Yep, unless the cost is prohibitive, the Titebond liquid hide glue is your best option. All of the benefits with non of the hassle.
